**PA Outdoor Learning: Ms. Pei Leads J2 ESL Class in Exploring Nature**

On the morning of Thursday, June 6, 2024, the ESL Group 2 class at The Affiliated High School of Tunghai University experienced a special outdoor learning activity. This event, led by Ms. Pei, aimed to bring students closer to nature and improve their English listening and speaking skills.

**Background and Purpose**

The inspiration for this outdoor learning activity came from the school's Performing Arts Night, which features a segment focused on connecting with nature, coexisting harmoniously, and environmental protection. To help students better understand and practice these environmental topics, Ms. Pei decided to conduct an immersive nature exploration on campus. This activity also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

**Activity Arrangement**

The activity took place at several natural locations on the Tunghai University campus, including the equestrian field, pastures, campus lawns, and the Dairy Cottage. Students had the opportunity to observe various animals and plants.

**Educational Content**

Throughout the activity, Ms. Pei provided detailed explanations about different animals, plants, and their ecosystems, and discussed related environmental issues. Students not only learned rich natural knowledge but also practiced their English listening and communication skills through interactive real-life experiences. Ms. Pei emphasized the importance of biodiversity conservation and introduced SDG Goal 15, highlighting the necessity of protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems. Additionally, students learned about SDG Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), discussing ways to reduce pollution and promote sustainable resource use.

During the exploration, a curious student asked, "Ms. Pei, what is this cicada shell?" Ms. Pei explained in English the origin and traditional medicinal uses of cicada shells: "This is a cicada shell. It is the exoskeleton left behind when a cicada molts. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to treat fever, sore throat, and skin conditions." The students responded with amazement, saying, "Wow, we have learned so much knowledge!"

**Student Sharing and Reflection**

At the end of the activity, students returned to the Dairy Cottage for a 3-minute individual experience sharing session. They described their feelings and insights from the nature exploration in English, which not only trained their speaking skills but also deepened their understanding of environmental protection and nature conservation. Many students mentioned that they had learned the importance of SDG Goal 13 (Climate Action) and expressed a commitment to adopting more environmentally friendly behaviors in their daily lives.

Additionally, Ms. Pei designed a reflection questionnaire for students to evaluate their performance during the Performing Arts Night, including individual and group strengths and weaknesses, areas for improvement, and suggestions for the preparation and performance process.
